When I was a kid (long before you were born) TV commercials were often aired live. Watches withstood torture tests. Dogs devoured heaping bowls of Alpo® and lawn mowers started with one pull of a cord. That is, if things went as planned. The drama of real-time product demonstration was intense. Back then, television packed a wallop. Widespread impressions were made quickly. Sales results could be traced directly to the commercials.

Chances are, by the time you see a product on a retail shelf, many people, not just the inventors, have been involved in its creation. This holds true in building successful brands, too. When we presented Write On Riot fill-in-the-blank party products to major retailers, they understood the concept. That didn’t mean they were ready to buy, it meant they understood the concept. In my world that constitutes a successful meeting. Because now our potential retailers have something to roll around in— a concept that can be customized to meet their guests’ needs and desires.

Ever have a kick-ass idea you just know would be a big seller? My brother invented inline skates. And two years after he thought up this amazing product, he witnessed a kid flying down the street on a pair. Someone
else had the same idea, plus the financing, know-how, partnerships and persistence to bring the product to life. Sadly, my brother’s idea went no further than sketches and some notes.
